psychological therapies......Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is the most common form of psychological therapy used in the NHS today.

CBT is a very goal-focused approach and is very useful in addressing conditions relating to self-image, self-confidence and self-belief. It assumes that thoughts affect feelings which in turn affect behaviour. For instance, an individual may have a 'core' belief such as 'in order to be liked I have to be successful'. This will lead to feelings of inadequacy and fears of rejection. The individual will then be caught up in patterns of behaviour aimed at being liked in all situations by all people.

A CBT therepeutic approach to this would typically involve monitoring the negative thoughts which allows the individual to identify and clarify them. The individual is then taught how to apply rational challenges to the negative thoughts and break the pattern of thoughts. This in turn will change the behaviour.

All psychologists will have received training in CBT, as part of their course requirements.
